Excessive Sweating

Excessive Sweating
Sweating is a reaction that occurs in response to an increase in body temperature. Situations that cause an increase in body temperature (hot environment, physical exercise, emotional stress) can increase sweating. If excessive sweating occurs without these conditions and negatively affects the person's mental state and hinders his or her social life, it may need to be treated. Limited hyperhidrosis is the most common type of hyperhidrosis. Both sides of the body are affected simultaneously. One or more of the palms, soles, armpits, scalp, and neck areas may be involved. Sweating can be constant or triggered by emotions such as shame and excitement. There is usually no sweating during sleep. In generalized hyperhidrosis, increased sweating is observed in every part of the body. It may occur due to infections, hormonal diseases such as diabetes and overactivity of the thyroid gland, obesity, menopause, gout and some medications, or no cause can be found.
The choice of treatment is made by taking into account the areas where sweating occurs, the severity of sweating, and the treatments the patient has used before. Treatment includes medications applied to the skin surface, iontophoresis, botulinum toxin injections, surgical interventions and oral medications.
Causes of excessive sweating
Excessive sweating is the increase in the amount of sweat secreted to the skin surface due to the hyperactivity of the sweat glands. It is most commonly seen in the palms, soles and armpits. It usually begins in childhood or adolescence and can continue for years.
Usually, excessive sweating occurs structurally. There is a family history in 40 percent of cases. Rarely, a disease (such as thyroid gland diseases and diabetes) or some medications used (such as aspirin and insulin) may be the cause of excessive sweating.
How is it treated?
Two methods with proven effectiveness are used in the treatment of structurally occurring excessive sweating;
1. Iontophoresis
2. Botulinum toxin injection
Iontophoresis is a process in which a current of 15-25 milliamps is applied to the hands and feet in tap water or specially medicated water.
It is applied in the treatment of excessive sweating seen in the palms and soles of the feet.
It is thought to have an effect by causing blockage in sweat gland ducts.
The decrease in sweating occurs within 1-2 weeks. Once the desired effect is achieved at the end of the first month, it can be repeated every 2 weeks or once a month.
Botulinum toxin is a drug obtained from the bacterium called Clostridium botulinum found in soil and water. Botulinum toxin shows its effect by preventing the release of substances that provide transmission at nerve endings and stopping the transmission between nerves and the organs that the nerves reach. It has been used in the treatment of excessive sweating since 1994.
Reductions in sweating begin to be seen 3 days after the application. The effect reaches its highest level approximately on the 5th and 7th days and sweating almost disappears completely.
Excessive Sweating Treatment with Botox
Excessive sweating and sometimes even normal sweating can disturb people. That's why the demand for sweating treatment is high, especially in spring and summer. Sweating treatment can be done in many different ways. These include removing the nerve ganglia that cause sweating, destroying the sweat glands in this area with a superficial laser liposuction, and medically treating sweating with botox.
Stress, stimulating drugs such as emetics and insulins, overactivity of the thyroid gland, adrenal gland diseases, menopause, hypoglycemia, obesity, drugs and hormones used in the treatment of some cancers are among the main causes of excessive and excessive sweating. However, excessive sweating may also occur due to structural reasons, independent of a disease.
Botox is used for aesthetic and cosmetic purposes today. It can also be used in the treatment of some diseases. Another use of Botox, apart from aesthetics, is to eliminate excessive sweating and the discomfort caused by it. Botox is widely used against sweating disease, which can occur in the armpits, hands and feet and is called "hyperhidrosis" in medical terms. Botox is used extensively especially for armpit sweating.
Botox application is a very easy and practical option in the treatment of sweating. The area where sweating is intense is first marked, and botox injected under the skin in determined doses affects the nerves reaching the sweat glands, preventing them from secreting sweat and contracting. Sweating treatment with Botox is a temporary treatment that lasts approximately 6-8 months.
Depending on the person, it is possible to stop the excessive secretion of sweat from the sweat glands for a certain period of time and thus eliminate sweating in the armpits, palms and soles of the feet, especially in the summer months.
